Same as the FUJI ROD Hiroshi Fujiwara P-Rod 2 launched in Japan, Singapore and Malaysia last month, this HAT ROD Tinker Hatfield P-Rod 2 is the 2nd collaboration to launch in the same series. As known as J-Rod 2, this HAT ROD is designed by Tinker Hatfield. The woven fabric from the Air Jordan 15 made its way to the side panel and the pebbled leather around the toe is a quite reminiscent of the Air Jordan 12.

It is available now at KIX-FILES Online Shop in extremely limited quantity. Good Luck!

WHAT IS TOYPUNKS?

Toypunks is a documentary film series covering the converging worlds of Japanese toys, fashion and punk rock. Via location shooting around the globe, toypunks spotlights several top Japanese fashion designers, toy makers and artists illuminating the fact that most of these influential creators find deep roots in DIY, punk and outsider attitudes. Several top US artists and toy makers are included in the discussion, revealing profound parallels between their lives and those of their Japanese contemporaries.

toypunks is collaboration between Justin Kovalsky and Chris Nelson. The two met in Houston, Texas, where Kovalsky was working as assistant editor of Newytpe USA, and Nelson was creating and launching the Anime Network, a 24 hour digital cable network with a footprint of over 20 million households. Kovalsky and Nelson developed a bond around electric guitars and Japanese culture.

Kovalsky grew up in Baltimore, MD, a skateboarding guitarist with an inordinate interest in Japan. He went on to work as a freelance writer for Viz Communications in SF and then, following a stint as assistant editor of Newtype USA, he worked as editor of Super7 magazine. Most recently Justin has been a contributing editor and writer for Juxtapoz magazine, covering the burgeoning designer toy scene with an eye towards upcoming Japanese brands. He has a modest toy collection, featuring a balance of classic characters and current vinyl from the Japanese underground.

Nelson was born and raised in New Orleans, fronting a post-punk band throughout high school. In addition to the interstitial and branding work for Anime Network, Nelson brings 14 years of professional experience as an editor, director, creative director and videographer. Key credits include editor on VH1’s Video Timeline series, commercials for Burger King, Continental Airlines and Havoline. He has been a segment editor for ESPN2, Fox and ABC Sports as well as a frequent collaborator with Houston’s ttweak, most recently as editor and post production supervisor for Tapping Maple Ridge, a HD documentary about the intersection of wind energy and maple syrup production.

The toypunks crew is thrilled to be joined in Tokyo by collaborator and translator Carl Wormley, who after graduating from Morehouse in Atlanta, GA spent six years living in Nagoya, Japan, which changed his life. Wormley has worked as a designer, subtitle script writer and producer and was recruited by Nelson to be a part of the start up team for Anime Network. Wormley’s artwork incorporates paper cutting and folding, textiles, sewing, and lighting into organic three dimensional sculptural works which reference the role of Japanese culture and aesthetics in his life.

Blast from the Past

The year was 1994 and Airwalk had an instant hit with the “Jim” trio. In true irreverent skate fashion, the “Jim” styles poked fun at more traditional sports, with a hi-top made from goosepimpled basketball rubber, a fuzzy low style fashioned from tennis-ball fabric, and a golf-inspired style (not pictured) with a dimpled toe. Though these styles have been relegated to the archives, there are still some pairs in existence. Look for them on eBay or ask a collector!

Singapore based sneaker boutique Limited Edt has collaborated with New Balance to produce Singapore’s first ever collaboration between a local sneaker boutique and a major sporting goods company. The Made in England New Balance 577 BBL has been made in a limited run of only 140 pairs worldwide and will be released on 29th February 2008 . Each pair will be individually numbered and come in a special box with a combination lock that will correspond to the serial number of the sneaker.

The sneakers were produced to mark the 5 year anniversary of Limited Edt which first opened its door in early 2003 at Queensway Shopping Centre and was Singapore’s first sneaker boutique of its kind. According to Mandeep Chopra, General Manager of Limited Edt, ‘We chose to work with New Balance on this project as they have been very supportive of us right from day one of our opening. Back then for New Balance we only carried the Made in England range, so we decided to go back in time and chose the Made in England 577 silhouette to do a colorway that was distinctive yet not too flashy in line with the Made in England range.

Themed after Limited Edt’s store in the Heeren called the Vault. The Burgundy/Black colorway of the shoe matches the interior of the store with gold threading and gold highlights representing the opulent décor of the store. The shoe also comes with 2 sets of laces and 2 sets of lace locks. One in gold and one in silver, with the silver representing the actual mock ‘Bank Vault’ door within the store that is a secret chamber of some of the most limited, rare and sought after sneakers ever produced. Even the shoe box takes inspiration from this ‘Bank Vault’ with its metallic silver finish and the combination lock reminds you that you are purchasing a very exclusive and valuable product. The inner lining of the box is draped with maroon velvet similar to the walls that adorn the store. The graphic on the box and insole represents the handle of the ‘Bank Vault’ and was designed by Moritz Kofler an architect who hails from Germany.

For a more in deep interview with Mandeep, the General Manager of Limited Edt, please read the whole story on Sneaker Freaker.

To celebrate 100 years of being a true original and innovator on the basketball court, Converse will launch a unique television spot featuring one of the game’s most exciting and influential players ever - Julius “Dr. J” Erving.

Widely credited as the first player to bring the game of professional basketball “above the rim,” Erving made some of the most memorable, jaw-dropping plays in the ABA and NBA in the ‘70s and ‘80s. His elite, graceful athleticism, as well as his on and off-court style and professionalism, has made Erving one of the most celebrated players of the last 30 years, and a true original and ambassador of the game.

The :15 second television spot features slow motion game footage from a contest between the Philadelphia 76ers and Chicago Bulls during the 1985-86 NBA season. The spot features a voice over of an announcer stating the NBA Slam Dunk contest rules. It begins with Erving receiving the ball near mid-court. He then glides toward the basket in his classic, effortless stride that became his signature, before putting down a violent, “Rock the Cradle” slam dunk in front of an exploding crowd.

Following on the heels of the ad spot, Converse will re-issue the Pro Leather 1976, which was made famous by Julius “Dr. J” Erving and enjoyed immense popularity when he began to wear the shoe in 1976, and became a standard for the court warriors in playgrounds like NYC’s Rucker Park. The limited edition shoe will be available on April 1 for $70.
